Let’s Welcome the Newly Fledged of the Wissahickon’s Meadows!

News // September 17, 2026

“Reporting live from Houston and Andorra Meadows- it’s our young-fledged report from our volunteer correspondents with Friends of the Wissahickon News.

The scoop is there are some new residents who have moved into the park’s 60 habitat boxes and reportedly, nearly 100% of survey respondents agree- they’re very cute.”

The park’s habitat boxes are more than just condos for the area’s bird populations- they also provide an opportunity for FOW to monitor indicator species: Eastern bluebirds, Carolina wrens, Tree swallows, and chickadees.

By tracking how many baby birds are born each year, we can gauge the health of our meadows. Eastern bluebirds are particularly sensitive to the conditions of their habitat, so if they aren’t laying eggs, it might warrant further investigation into the habitat quality of Andorra and Houston Meadows.

Luckily, nine months into the year, it seems like all is well in the meadows. Our volunteer habitat monitors who regularly survey the boxes have reported TONS of activity. And we have baby photos.

A huge thank you to the volunteers who carefully monitor our bird boxes. Without you, it would be impossible for us to gather this important data and support thriving meadows.
