Virtual Valley Talk: Lenape, A Living Language With Shelley DePaul

September 14, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Like many place names in Lenapehoking, the traditional land of the Lenape people, Wissahickon is derived from a Lenape phrase: wisameckam, or “catfish creek”. Join Shelley Depaul, Chief of Education and Language for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, to discuss the continuing history and culture of the Lenape as well as her work to reclaim and revitalize the Lenape language today.

Shelley Depaul has worked for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania since 2004 as Genealogy Researcher, Historical Researcher, Lenape Language Specialist, and Educator, and currently is Chief of Education and Language on the Council of the LNPA. She teaches Lenape Language classes and workshops and has developed a Lenape language curriculum for use in schools and universities, as well as taught courses in the Lenape Language at Swarthmore College. Depaul has also presented lectures and educational programs on the subject of Lenape History and Culture to schools and universities, environmental organizations, churches, historical societies and youth groups, and is co-curator of the current exhibit at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, “Fulfilling a Prophecy: The Past and Present of the Lenape in Pennsylvania ” and of the Lenape exhibit at the Sigal Museum in Easton. Both exhibits relate the long-hidden story of the survival of the Lenape in their homelands and feature never before displayed objects from the private collections of Lenape people in Pennsylvania.

This event will be held virtually on Zoom.
