Moth Night in Andorra Natural Area w/ Kris Soffa

Meet at the Wissahickon Environmental Center.
Join us for this evening experience to learn about these alluring nighttime beauties. FOW Trail Ambassador and PA Master Naturalist Kris Soffa will be giving a “Moth Basics” PowerPoint orientation and teaching best ways to observe moths in your home garden, how to construct a simple catch & release moth trap, how to set up ultra violet light lures, and how to set “sugaring lures” with her secret 3B Moth Bait recipe. Meet special guest, environmental scientist Vaughn Shirey, who will share how to participate in Citizen Scientist moth identification project. Please bring: flashlights and a smartphone (to register your sightings on the Citizen Scientist project site: http://www.inaturalist.org/projects/philabugorg) Be prepared to walk quietly on the trails and woods in the dark. Suitable for children 10 years and older with an accompanying responsible adult.
Please note: The GPS location only directs you to the lower parking lot. To reach the Tree House, (Wissahickon Environmental Center) follow the dirt road at the intersection of Forbidden Drive and Northwestern Avenue up the hill. The Environmental Center is at the end of this road.
Registration is recommended for all hikes (required if indicated) so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. Unless otherwise specified, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Long pants are recommended for protection against occasional poison ivy and possible ticks. Bring water and a snack if desired. Unless otherwise noted, children over six are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions.
