Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteer Day of Service
January 20, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Meeting at Thomas Mansion (6245 Wissahickon Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19144)
Thomas Mansion in Germantown is a historic property built in 1869 by George Clifford Thomas and his wife Caroline Sheetz. The property, which once boasted beautifully landscaped gardens and a green house, needs lots of regular maintenance to keep from becoming overgrown. For each of the last two MLK days, we’ve worked on the mansion grounds by clearing the overgrown invasive plants along the driveway, a project we will continue on this year. We also planted about 20 native trees at this location this past fall, so we will need to clean up the area around them to ensure they are safe and thriving.
Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” By volunteering at Thomas Mansion, we will be giving back to our park, it’s users, and the plants and animals that rely on it to live.
