Activities at Historic RittenhouseTown

Historic RittenhouseTown (HRT) offers classes, workshops and events for individuals and families to learn about the craft of hand papermaking and other spects of Colonial life at the original Rittenhouse Family Homestead. Activities at the Wissahickon Environmental Center

The Wissahickon Environmental Center (WEC) at Andorra Natural Area (Forbidden Drive and Northwestern Ave.) offers the following activities to teach individuals about the natural world. Registration is required for all programs. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are FREE, meet atthe Tree House, and last approximately 90

WEDNESDAY, JULY THROUGH AUGUST 27

“Story and Stroll” Summer Series. 2 to 3 pm. Come to the Tree House with your child for an afternoon story and discovery walk. We’ll read a nature book from the Backyard Books series and take a walk outdoors bringing the story to life. Ages 3-5. $3.00/child for each program.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2    

Butterfly Walk.  2 pm. Join us for a walk through the Andorra meadows in search of butterflies. Learn about their role as pollinators and discover the variety of species that inhabit the meadow. Using field guides, we’ll take a closer look at these beautiful insects and try to identify them. All ages welcome.

 

TUESDAY, AUGUST 19

Wilderness Survival. 1 to 4 pm. This program will cover basic wilderness survival skills, such as finding food and water, building a campfire, and using materials from the forest to create a protective shelter. Ages 10-16. $5.00/person.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Full Moon Hike (For Adults) 7 pm. This program will take the adventurous into the forest by the light of the full moon. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the area as we hike through forest and meadow habitats. After the hike, join us as we gather around a small campfire. $2.00/person.

Faeries, Folks & Fables    

Outdoor Gallery: 10 am to 4 pm (No need to register.)

Program: 2 pm (Pre-registration is required.)  

Come to the Tree House and take a walk through this magical, outdoor gallery. Find the faeries and nature folk in this photography exhibit by local artist, photographer and nature-lover, Kim Soles. Join in at 2:00 p.m. to hear a fable and create a simple faerie home for your garden. All ages welcome.

 

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

Bats - The Mysteries Revealed. 6 pm. Are bats blind? Will they fly into your hair? Separate fact from myth with fun bat activities and games. Learn about the benefits of Pennsylvania’s bat species and then take a hike to the creek to see brown bats in action. All ages welcome.

As part of FOW’s Protect Our Watershed series, The Wissahickon Environmental Center staff is available to deliver a FREE presentation about watershed issues to your organization. Learn how you can play a role in cleaning up the waterways near your home. Call for information.
