Devil's Pool Clean-Up

FOW is undertaking a long-term, multifaceted program of education, clean-up, and ongoing maintenance at Devil’s Pool in Wissahickon Valley Park (where Cresheim Creek enters the Wissahickon near Livezey Lane). In recent years the trees, rock formations, and man made structures in this area have been covered with graffiti. During the warmer months, users of this area regularly leave behind trash which park personnel can not remove because the area is difficult for them to access. Through outreach and education, the Friends hope to develop a sense of stewardship among the users of Devil’s Pool.

Clean up Effort

● Initial Spring/Summer 2008 Clean Up staffed by volunteers

● Ongoing cleaning and graffiti maintenance of the area, including the placement and routine servicing of trash cans and periodic graffiti removal by volunteers and paid summer interns

● Education of Devil’s Pool users regarding the need to preserve this special place, and police enforcement of park rules (particularly regarding parking, drinking, and fires) in the area

FOW Needs Your Help

Maintenance. Help keep the area clean and graffiti free. Contact Volunteer Coordinator Kevin Groves at 215-247-0417 or groves@fow.org. Give your name and contact information, and you will be sent notice of Devil’s Pool clean up days and other ways you can help on a continuing basis. Large scale cleanup days are scheduled this summer for the 2nd Saturday of each month: June 14, July 12 and August 9, from 9 am to 2 pm.

Respect. If you are a user of Devil’s Pool, please treat the area with respect. Take your trash with you when you leave, or use the trash cans. Encourage others to do the same. Do not graffiti, and don’t let others mark up the area either. Speak up. Don’t be afraid.

Internship. If you or someone you know is interested in a paid summer internship working to keep Devil’s Pool clean, particularly if you are a user of Devil’s Pool, call FOW’s office at 215-247-0417 to apply.

Donate. Help us with the cost of this effort. Send a donation marked “Devil’s Pool Fund” to FOW at 8708 Germantown Ave., Phila. PA 19118), or give money for the fund to any FOW volunteer working in the park.
